Both saunas and steam rooms are said to be extremely relaxing. The raised temperature increases circulation and opens the pores of the skin. Users like to take a cold shower or have a swim after a sauna or steam bath to rapidly reduce the body temperature and close the pores. This is said to complete the relaxing and exhilarating effect of the sauna or steam room.

Saunas contain a heater inside a timber lined enclosure on which water is poured at intervals to create the humidity. Saunas operate at a higher temperature than steam rooms.

Steam Rooms operate at a lower temperature and the steam is pumped into the room from outside. Steam room enclosures are tile or fibreglass lined and are thus more expensive to install than saunas.
