Whether choosing turf for a newly created lawn area or rejuvenating an existing lawn, preparation is the key. The area must be well cleared of weeds and foreign grasses, levelled and fertilized. With correct preparation new turf should be established within 4-6 weeks.

Choosing the type of grass best suited to your situation is critical. Many varieties are now available.

Couch grass is a native of the Sydney area and accounts for approximately 25% of lawns in the Sydney area. Couch thrives with warmer temperatures and tends to brown in winter, not doing well in frosts. Couch varieties include — Blue Couch, Santa Anna, CT2, Windsor green, Winter Green and Greenleas Park. Growers and landscapers can advise on the best type for your situation.

Kikuyu is of South African origin and is very popular in the Sydney area making up more than 70% of all lawns. Kikuyu can be turfed or grown from runners and is a fast grower.

Buffalo is a natural grass with a coarse leaf. The common buffalo does not thrive well in shade but varieties of soft leaf buffalo have been developed to suit shade areas and sandy soils. Varieties available are soft leaf, shademaster and ST85 and the new Sir Walter keeps its colour throughout the winter.

Durban grass originates from South Africa and is suitable for fully shaded areas of the garden. It will not, however, successfully tolerate sunlight.

Ornamental grasses such as rye, bent and fescue are used successfully in shaded areas and areas of little traffic. They are grown from seed. New varieties are continually being developed.

Lawns need to be continually maintained, they need to be kept well — fertilise and weed free to look their best. Some companies offer continual maintenance programs for your lawn to keep their appearance at an optimum level all year round.
