Timber is a natural product which is pleasant underfoot and adds warmth and comfort to the feel of a room. Timber can be divided into hardwoods and softwoods and both can successfully be used for floors and benchtops. Timber is a strong material which is easily worked but it should be sealed or painted in areas of considerable use. Sealing not only provides durability but enhances colours and patterns in the timber itself. Timber floors can be structural (laid directly on bearers and joists) or laid over the top of other materials.

Floating floors are popular where an absorbent layer separates the surface finish from the structural floor. All timber darkens with age — a factor which should be kept in mind when choosing a timber type. There is great variation in timber so it is wise to see a sample of the timber you are considering for purchase.

Parquetry is a popular timber for floors. Parquetry is constructed from small blocks of wood laid in patterns. Traditionally this was a herringbone pattern with a plain border surround but recently many patterns and inlays have become available. Brass inlays can be added for a different effect.

Plywood and Chipboard can also be successfully used for flooring particularly as part of a modern theme. The timber is usually laid over an existing floor and is clear sealed.

New and Recycled Timber is used for flooring and often second hand timber can be purchased to match or extend existing flooring in a home. This is particularly useful if the timber strips are of an unusual or premetric size and an exact match is required.

Laminated Timbers can also be successfully used for flooring and other finishes to create a timber effect.

Bamboo is enjoying popularity in recent times. The material is particularly durable and the colours enhance any decor.
