Slate was formed 300-500 million years ago by compression of clays, earth and rocks. It is layered in nature and extremely dense and hard wearing. Slate can absorb oils and thus is best sealed in areas of heavy wear. The colour of slate varies according to the area from which it was quarried and can range from dark grey through to browns and greens.

Sealers can be water or solvent based. Water based sealants are less hardwearing but make less change to the finish than solvent based sealers. Always trial an unobtrusive patch first before applying anything to the entire surface. White spirit can be used to remove oil and grease stains. Other stains are best removed with mild detergent.
