Cork tiles and sheeting are made from the bark of the cork oak tree. Cork flooring is soft underfoot and is a good insulator. Cork needs to be coated to prevent staining and wear and is available in several different grades (thicknesses). Cork can be purchased unfinished and coated in situ or in prefinished tiles ready to lay. For an interesting look different coloured corks can be combined in patterns, a popular choice being a darker border in a mat design one tile off the wall all the way around the room.

Cork can be coloured to achieve different finishes and is popular in limed finishes. The base on which a cork floor is laid must be level and without imperfections. If the sub-base is timber masonite should be laid over the top prior to laying the cork floor.
