What product do you choose from the array available when deciding on balustrading or pool fencing? The choice will depend not only on the particular situation and the products available, but on the price and style.
Metal fencing has become extremely popular and has the advantage of being able to be made to follow sloping ground or to create a curve with ease. Many styles are available either from a standard range or made to order. Sheet aluminium or tubular products are all popular. The product can be finished in colours to suit and white powder coated prior to delivery, or painted on site. Dark colours are less obtrusive than lighter colours. Older metal fences which have deteriorated can easily be repainted quickly and with no mess using electrostatic spraying. Your contractor can advise on available options. Glass fencing is popular nowadays for balustrading and pool fencing and provides safety with minimum reduction of view.

Pool fencing can be constructed of any material which allows compliance with safety standards. Metal, glass and some timber fencing can be constructed with rails and posts strategically to take account such restrictions.

Council regulations should be strictly adhered to. Many require fences to be of certain height and rails certain distances apart.. Gate latches have to be of approved types which are out of reach of young children.
 

Pool Gates

In 1992 an Act of Parliament determined the requirements for pool fencing and gates. Many children drown each year in domestic pools and despite increased awareness the number of drownings continues to be of major concern. All pool gates must be at least 1.4m high with the space underneath the gate being no more than 100mm. Safety latches must be installed and these must comply with Australian Standard AS1926-1993. Latches must be at least 1.5m from the ground and gates must open out and close automatically. Regularly check the operation of your pool gate to check that it is functioning correctly.
