Paling and Lap & Cap fencing can be constructed of either hardwood or treated pine. Hardwood is extremely durable and posts are generally treated against pests. Pine is light to work with and is pretreated against pest infestation. Lap and cap fencing provides an attractive look but an economical option is to incorporate a top rail into the construction of a paling fence.

While the framing of most timber fences is constructed of hardwood and the posts are often retreated against pest infestation, one alternative is to use steel posts to increase the life span of your fence

Lattice products can make an attractive screening fence allowing some view through while securing the area. Lattice panels can be used in combination with other materials such as brick and other timbers and can be shaped into arches or peaks to create effect. Lattice can be used to attractively raise the height of an existing fence and either be left in the natural state or used to hold vines. Different qualities and different sizes of lattice are available to suit particular applications.

Timber Gates For functional purposes, gates within the bounds of lapped & capped fences can be successfully constructed of the same material in areas where gates are to be a feature, different materials look best - wrought iron or tubular metal, lattice or a fancy picket gate.

The possibilities of design are endless here and styles can be adapted to fit in with the theme of the home. Gates and fancy arbors or lychgates can be used to highlight entry or passage points. Proportion is the most important factor when considering the design of a picket fence. Thought must be given to the size and position of the house relative to the fence. Single level homes and those positioned below road level will need a smaller, lighter fence than larger homes.

Be careful to consider the size of the pickets and the spacing between them. Pickets spaced too far apart can undermine the quality look of a fence. Similarly, too small a post or handrail can detract from the finished effect.
To add interest to the overall look of your picket fence, the gates should be in a different design to the picket style chosen for the fence. This will not only add to the quality look but will clearly indicate entry points. If your entry gate is an entrance to a pool area, the design must be such that any cross timbers that can provide a foothold must be regulation distances apart and a safety pool latch must be affixed. Your supplier will be able to indicate local regulations.
