Lighting does not simply provide illumination to a room, it creates a mood. With lighting we can emphasize areas, soften areas for a relaxing mood, illuminate backgrounds etc.

The choice of light fittings too is important and will vary according to the function of the room. Strong direct light is needed over desks, sinks and work areas and don’t forget laundry workspaces and reading areas.

Use spot lighting to highlight areas or items. Even light is best in hallways, while rooms used for relaxing need warm soft light. Dimmers can change the mood of a room totally and give more scope. Table lamps can replace overhead lighting to create a subtle atmosphere and an elegant touch. In larger rooms table lamps look best placed in pairs on either side of a feature piece of furniture.

On the exterior of the home garden lamps and lights on exterior walls and under eaves should be placed strategically not only for effect but to provide a safe entry and security for the home. Sensor lights are popular and can be set to come on as anyone approaches the home.

Specialist night lighting can be used to create an attractive landscaping effect.

Consider the different types of lighting:

Conventional globes give a yellow light. These incandescent globes are economical to purchase but their life span is limited.

Halogen lights give a white light, last longer and are more energy efficient but are initially more expensive. Halogen lights can be used to provide different angles of spread of light — so effects can be achieved from a spot effect to a wider spread wash. Halogen lights need a transformer which increases the cost and also the space needed. Some newer halogens are supplied with built-in transformers.

When planning lighting don’t always opt for the central room light:

-overhead pendant lights suit other homes but are not as versatile in effect.

-downlights provide background lighting and an overall effect. Downlights, usually halogen, can be used to effectively light under pelmets and cupboards and shelves for an interesting effect.

-wall lights create mood lighting and a softer effect.

-uplights direct light to the ceiling which reduces glare and creates a soft effect.

-lighting under pelmets or certain cornices can create subtle but effective lighting.

-lamps create a special mood and a luxury effect. A lamp on a corner table can be the feature of a room or alcove.

-bathroom lighting should receive special consideration. The mirror will need illuminating well. The white light of halogen lighting is very successful here. The lighting should be positioned in front of you and throw light onto the face. Room lighting should be either recessed or enclosed within a shade to resist the effect of steam.

Ceiling fans are excellent for circulating air in hotter weather. Not only do ceiling fans create a cool feel and air flow but they add an attractive effect to the room. Fans can incorporate a light for convenience and can be purchased in a variety of styles and finishes — rattan blades, stainless steel, colours etc.
