Front and back doors can be secured by the addition of a security screen door or grille which allows you to safely leave the doors open for air flow. It also means you can safely answer the door with a degree of confidence. Security doors are constructed of steel or aluminum. Steel is the stronger product but of course the cost is higher. Both need to comply with Australian Standards and it is a good idea to check this prior to purchase. Please note that this standard clearly states that one should not rely upon these doors to provide total security. If the security door is installed opening outwards, intruders cannot easily force their way in.

Security grilles for windows are an added safety device chosen by some householders, as are security louvres which open like venetian blinds but lock shut. Wrought iron grilles are popular too and can form a feature of the outside of the home itself. Custom made wrought iron grilles and screens can be most attractive while providing effective security. It is most important that the frame is extremely strong and the lock top quality.

Aluminum blinds are an effective security measure. Some blinds roll up and lock down, others are similar to vertical blinds but are able to be locked. Make sure these can be opened or removed in the case of fire.
The new security flyscreens can be wired to detect if an attempt is made to cut or remove them.

Steel expandable grille doors can be used to secure sliding doors or large openings and can be folded back when not in use. Again ease of access in case of fire is paramount.

Shutters can also form part of your home's security plan. Internal window shutters can now double up as a security deterrent if made of metal and fitted with a lock. Make sure you visit our section on shutters.
