Alarms
Inexpensive wireless do it yourself alarms and alarms that are transportable from home to home are popular with some householders. Make sure the detectors are placed appropriately and will detect a person not only walking but crouching. A detector on the manhole cover can prevent entry from the roof. Remote operators can be added to these systems and the control panel plugs into the home.
In larger homes or where personal choice dictates, wired in systems can be installed. Sensors can detect body heat or in the case of doors and windows, movement. Pads can be placed under carpets and mats to prevent entry to specific areas. Wired in systems can be zoned so that some areas can be secured while the family move about in other areas.
Panic buttons and pendant buttons worn on a chain can be a good idea, particularly for those who are nervous alone. Remote control of these systems is possible and the remote operator can be incorporated on the key ring with the operation of automatic doors and gates. Home automation systems can incorporate control of the alarm system as well.
Back to base security is an added protection and is reasonably priced. Panic buttons on the triggering of the alarm alert the monitoring company or ring you or the person you have nominated. Emergency services can be dispatched instantly.
Locks
Locks need to be secure and easy to operate. It is a good idea to have all the locks in the house keyed to the one key . Window locks too can in most cases be keyed alike to this one master key for added convenience.
Window locks come in many varieties, keyed and non-keyed. It is an idea to have 2 position settings such that the windows can be keyed shut or key locked in the open position to allow air flow with safety. Allow a maximum of 100mm when locked open. Keep a key to the window locks in a secure place in each room for convenience and safety. Forcing doors and windows is the most common way of a thief entering so window and door locks are of utmost importance.
Never leave spare keys under mats, in fuse boxes or under pot plants and always key lock the house when you leave. Digital locks can be an option where householders are nervous about leaving a spare key.
