The front door provides the first impression of your home and as such deserves special consideration. The front door looks most attractive painted in a darker colour than the rest of the trim on the home and any screen or security door on the external side of the front door should be finished in the same colour so as not to detract from the appeal of the door itself.
Doors can be either solid or hollow core in structure.
Modern solid doors are made of solid pieces of timber joined together. Price will vary according to the timber used. Solid doors can feature a variety of panelling or glass inserts. Second hand solid doors can sometimes be purchased from reputable recycling/second hand dealers to match doors in an older home.
Solid core doors are constructed of solid pieces of timber covered front and back by timber veneer.
MDF doors are solid but made of compressed material and can be purchased in veneered finish or with feature panels or glass inserts.
Hollow core doors are made of a timber frame and filled with cardboard material, finally being covered with a veneer. These doors cannot be grooved in panelled patterns but can have moulding fixed to the surface to create panelled features.
